Elias Canetti (July 25th, 1905 in Ruse, Bulgaria - August 14th, 1994 in Zurich, Switzerland) attended the canton school in Zurich for five years, between 1916-1921. These years were formative for him throughout his life and he remembered his teachers gratefully.
In 1972 Elias Canetti moved back to Zurich. After receiving the Nobel Prize in 1981, Canetti decided not to give interviews or readings and to live in seclusion with his small family in the city, until his death in 1994.
The author spent 37 years of his life in Zurich, mostly behind his desk at Klosbachstrasse 88.
His estate is in the Zurich Central Library and is looked after by the Canetti Foundation.
In 2024, 30 years after Canetti's death, his diary and letters will be accessible to science for the first time.
